Long time no blog!

May 29 2012

Wow it's been a Loooong time since I caught you all up on my life!! Right now is a really exciting time for me. I am currently taking two different acting classes, one is more improvisation and the other is based on the Stella Adler technique. It's is just great to be working in the room with other actors, who are all lovely and great, with great tutors. I am also super lucky to be processing my greencard at the moment. It is quite a long process and if all goes to plan I should have it by the end of the year. As well as this I have been auditioning here in Sydney, and really enjoying the lifestyle - living by the beach, going out with friends etc. Just having a great time and not being too stressed about the career (however there are some incredible projects that I am waiting to hear on, fingers crossed!).

I have been more and more keen to get into theatre this year, so my agents and I are exploring those options as well. Part of wanting to take the classes is my desire to work with really great writing and scripts, and that's where the theatre urge comes from as well. I have also been writing a film of my own. At Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School where I trained, there was a large emphasis on creating your own work. It can feel a little artistically stunting to constantly work on other people's projects and not express yourself in your own voice.

So this year I have been working incredibly on myself, my art, my craft and my voice.

Happy New Year!

Jan 10 2012

Happy New Year!

Wow 2012 has begun! I have just returned to Sydney from New Zealand where I went to the wedding of two of my best friends. It was so beautiful, and I stayed in a little cottage with all of my mates and had a great week - I already miss everyone! Sydney welcomed me home with open arms though and it was straight to the beach for some relief from this amazing weather.

The main questions people have sent in have been to do with any upcoming films or television series... well as luck would have it I am flying back to Auckland, New Zealand for the World Premiere of Sione's 2: Unfinished Business this Sunday! The film will be out in NZ cinemas from January 19th, please make sure you go along and see it - if it is half as fun as it was to make you are in for a treat! For those of you further afield I am assured that the film will come out early this year in Australia, and also have a premiere on the West Coast of the United States at some point.

My next exciting trip is back to L.A. for Pilot Season, I leave in 3 weeks! I am really excited about this, especially getting to work with my amazing agent over there and go out for auditions up to 3 times a day - what a dream. I will be in L.A. for about 7 weeks, staying with the delightfully gorgeous Marisa Ramirez who I played alongside in Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. I will also get to catch up with Lesley-Ann and some of my other friends who I haven't seen for ages who live over there so I'm looking forward to a good time, and boy have I been working hard to get there!

Some of the questions sent in I have answered in other interviews which you may not have seen yet, you will find that nearly everything is covered here http://thebringerofrain.net/interview/jessicagracesmith/ but if there is anything left out feel free to ask on the facebook fan page wall :)

Wishing you all a fantastic 2012, thank you for your support during the last year - it has been really fun getting to know you!

That's a Wrap! Edwin: The Koontz Show (working-title)

Nov 13 2011

Wow, what a whirlwind shoot this has been. I just arrived back in Sydney, we have pretty much shot a feature film in the space of a few weeks and I am pretty exhausted! I have really enjoyed the process of shooting so fast though, a nice change of pace from something like Spartacus which has the luxury of being shot quite slowly. This afternoon I got to shoot an AK47 (as most of you saw on facebook!!), we also flew to another city and back in the same day - the whole thing has been a whirlwind.

I have been able to catch up with my family - mum and dad, little bro, cousins and their gorgeous babies, it was like christmas! Which is really nice because I think this will be my first christmas away from home in 10 years, great to catch up with everyone. Also with my good friends that live here, this is the town where I studied acting and lived for 7 years so that has been great too. Ice skating last night!

This was the longest I have stayed in a hotel and it's funny how in the beginning it's quite fun and nice, and by the end all I want is a home cooked meal that doesn't require any microwave action! I am stoked to be back with the sun, sand, surf and lovely house back in Sydney :) Now it's time to start planning the next project, there are a few things in the pipeline and I have auditioned for SO many cool films lately - keep your fingers crossed for me!

SydneySide

September 29 2011

Wow. A lot has changed in the last month. I have been back and forth between LA, NZ and Oz, finally settling in Sydney into a new house close to the beach. It has been a somber month, with the passing of the beautifully talented Andy Whitfield, as well as that of my grandfather, so I welcome now a more settled and still time which allows for proper reflection on these lives.

I am auditioning here in Australia, and also sending audition tapes back to LA for consideration. I have some exciting prospects which I will share with you once they are confirmed. I recently did an interview for the Evening News, which is the local paper from the tiny town where I grew up - total surprise to hear from them! They are sending me a copy of it and I will try (with Roland's help!) to put it on here.

I can't believe only 20 days ago I was still in LA! I have to admit that while I enjoy the more casual beachside lifestyle here in Sydney, I do miss the pace of the auditions in LA, The Grove, Yogurtland, Eli... and of course my wonderful agent Alisa. Here's to making it back asap!

By the way, the address for fan mail is now here in Australia:
Jessica Grace Smith
c/- Shanahan Management Pty Ltd
PO Box 1509
Darlinghurst

Australia

However, if you have sent any mail to my NZ agent or US agent that is fine - I will receive it still! It just may take a little longer:-) Feel free to send through anything you would like signed, if you write a message I will do my best to answer your questions and get it back to you as quick as I can.

Once again folks, thank you so much for your support, especially during the last month which has been particularly full on in many ways.

Lots of Love

Leaving LALAland...

September 05 2011

Wow how quickly have the last few months gone!! I cannot believe I've been here almost 3 months and leave on Friday. I have had the BEST time - I absolutely love LA and the new friends and working relationships I've made, the trip has totally exceeded my expectations and I can't wait to get back here. I am really gutted to miss Lesley-Ann as I leave before she returns!! Eli and I have missed her very much and I was looking forward to catching up on all the goss as well as seeing Eli jump on her! Ah well... looks like it'll be Skype for us.

I am heading back to NZ for a couple of days to pick up my things and say goodbye to my friends, before I move to Sydney where I already have a house set up waiting for me - so lucky! I will be based there for the next wee while - although with acting you never quite know where you're going to end up... I feel like I have been nomadic for the last 8 months really having travelled to Argentina, Australia and USA for decent periods of time. It will be nice to feel like I've got a home again.

I hope you like the new site!

It's Been A While!

31 July 2011

Hey everyone! Well it's been aaaaages since my last post! Over a month and a half.. that is poor form. I just wanted to start by saying thank you so much to those of you who have sent me lovely messages via the website - your support means a lot and I do read them all!

I guess I should start by saying I was lucky enough to sign with Paradigm, one of the best agents in the world. They represent some of my favourite actors such as Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Adrien Brody - as well as the lovely Erin Cummings who I have met since being here and who I think is very cool :-)

So I have now been in L.A. for a month and a half, and it's going really well. At the moment I am still in 'meetings' mode, which is really cool it's where I go on meet and greets with the heads of casting around the city, and I've also been auditioning. The weather here is incredible and I now have an awesome tan woopwoop. I have also found a fantastic yoga and pilates place and walking Eli a few hours each day is keeping me active and healthy!

Lesley-Ann left for Australia about a week ago now so I have been by myself with Eli and we miss her very much!! But I chatted to her on the phone today and she is having a blast, cast dinner last night, lots of rehearsing and still managing to find time to get that yoga class in (how does she do it!). She has been so awesome to me this whole time, and the reason I am still here is because she has let me live in her apartment while she is away, so I just wanted to give a shout out and mega props to my home-girl!! Love you!

I am super excited for the next month because some of my favourite people in the whole wide world are coming to visit all the way from NZ - yay! I also went out for dinner last night with the super fun Peter Mensah and Nick Tarabay who are here on hiatus from shooting Spartacus: Vengeance. Soooo lovely to catch up - I was shown such a great time, which seems to be the case no matter where we are actually. They are having a blast this season and I am assured by both that it is going to be EPIC. I actually rehearsed a scene with Nick back when we were in NZ and I swear Ashur is taking it to a whole new level so watch out...

Lots of Love

Less than a week to go!

13 June 2011

Hello! My parents came up this weekend which was lots of fun. We went and saw my grandparents (dad's side) which was great - I hadn't seen them since my brother's wedding in January. We went shopping and out to a cute French restaurant for dinner, and then last night we played 500 and went out for the best chinese Ever. It was pretty chill and relaxed, but my dad bought my mum a GORGEOUS diamond ring because they've been together for about 32 years now! So a good time was had by all :)

I am just getting everything prepared for L.A. - I know I've been saying that for a while now! I had some new headshots done (check out my facebook & imdb pages) and my showreel is all finished now, I will put it on as soon as I can! I leave on Sunday and it is creeping up so quickly I can't believe it. In an impulse decision I booked flights to NYC for 4th of July weekend - agh! Can't wait for that. Especially because it means going down to Philly for the actual holiday and spending it with my brother and his wife, and her family. FUN!

I am also Especially looking forward to catching up with Lesley-Ann, she is such a fun chick and it's been ages since we saw each other! I also have plans to meet Steven DeKnight for the first time along with some of the other writers, and hopefully some of the producers at STARZ too.

Well, here's hoping everything goes better than "to plan"! Thanks again for all the support.

That's a Wrap!

02 June 2011

Man the last few weeks have been Full On! I am writing this from my hotel room in Melbourne where I have just arrived after a ladies lunch out and lots of shopping. I have been so slack have hardly even managed to get to the gym for the last few weeks as I was in Wellington, then all last week I was shooting 5am starts and this week I'm in Oz. Next week I will get back on the wagon! Haha.
I wrapped up Sione's 2 on Sunday, awesome to finish the project - I really had such a great time with the cast and crew - hilarious people! I'm sure the film will be a hit too, lots of comic brains on that one, I can't wait to see the finished product. (Premiere's on January 15th in Auckland, New Zealand and January 17th in Samoa - good excuse for a holiday!!)
Now I'm just trying to work out my budget for the LA trip, and what other cool things I can get up to while I'm there - at the moment I'm thinking a sneaky trip to NYC for 4th of July weekend and then down to Philly to see my big brother... Exciting!
Thank you all once again for your messages - your support means a lot, especially now I am about to embark on this important journey.

A Week in Wellington

19 May 2011

Hello! This week I went down to the capital city of New Zealand. The main purpose of my trip was to teach some screen acting classes and audition technique to the students in their final year at Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School, the school I graduated from at the end of 2009. It was the first time I'd been back and it was sort of overwhelming! But it was also awesome to see my teachers again and share my experiences with the students. I went and saw some stand-up comedy (Ben Hurley who is Hilarious!) and a couple of theatre shows, dinner with friends and now I am staying at my parents (for whom I will cook delectable chicken burritos tonight YUM!).
Back to Auckland on Saturday and filming solidly all next week on Sione's and then we will wrap :-( Then I have less than three weeks to get everything sorted for my L.A. trip, I am excited and nervous about it but can't wait to catch up with the stunning Lesley-Ann Brandt and see the sights of Hollywood!

Day to day

12 May 2011

Good morning! The weather in Auckland has been monsoon-like of late, and to be honest I'm a bit over it! However i've been able to catch up on one of my favourite TV shows Misfits which is about a group of late teens/early 20s who get awesome super powers - check it out :-)
I have begun planning for my L.A. trip which is exciting, there is so much I have to do - lots of stuff to collect if I am to get the 01 Visa.
Porridge with walnuts and cranberries for breakfast, I'm off to yoga soon and then this afternoon I'll be baking either brownies or chocolate chip bikkies for the flat- YUM! (Yesterday I met a chef who gave me his brownie recipe which includes moro bar mmmm.)
This week I have had a bit of time off from Sione's 2 and I miss it - the cast and crew especially! I'll be back in a week and a half and til then trying to keep busy (babysitting, baking, gym...!)
I'd love for you to post a favourite recipe on my FB wall - savoury/sweet anything goes. You are all from such different cultures I'll give you extra points if it's a traditional dish from your country.
Hasta la proxima

Welcome to my new website!

30 April 2011

Hello everyone and welcome to my new website, made by the fantastic Roland Jagados!
I am very grateful to him as I am slightly technologically inept and could never have done this alone.

Right now I am in the middle of filming on a feature called Sione's 2. It is so much fun, I am having a blast with the cast and crew and feel really lucky to be working on it - especially because the first one was such a hit.
I am living in Auckland, New Zealand and really enjoying it here with all my friends - tonight we are going to dinner and to see our friend's play which I'm looking forward to... oh and while I'm on the subject of plans some gladiators are coming over for dinner tomorrow... you'll never guess who! If you're lucky I'll put some photos on my facebook page.
